In this article I'm telling my viewpoints about smartphone maker motorola which all off us know

Motorola was a pioneer in telephone industry.

They made world's first telephone mobile device which was a size of a brick . It charged around 30 hrs and gave just half an hour of standby time. This was a start to era where handheld communication devices were started. Atleast considered a good start in those old days .Sigh!

Then after sometime came the flip phones of Motorola called "Razr" introduced in 2003 went on to sell 50 million units. Such was it's popularity

They then collaborated with Apple to integrate i-tunes to make a device called "Rokr" which miserably failed. Hence apple came out with their own device which we all know today as "iPhone"

Motorola had been running through losses around 2007 to 2009 accumulating over $4.3 billion. The company was split into two units called "Motorola Mobility" and " Motorola solutions".

Then we saw a Googles-cue in May 2012 and purchased them for $12.4 billion dollars. Golden days of Motorola where mid-range G series and entry level E series were produced focusing on cleaner user experience and security patches up-to date at par with nexus devices without burning a hole in customer's pocket

However these times were not to last very long as Google sold Motorola to Lenovo for $2.9 billion and kept the patents to strengthen it's Android game which they were good at.

Lenovo wanted to enter US market and hence Google was back focusing on software. However things were not to good for "Moto by Lenovo " . Software updates were on down side and launching too many variants . We saw how it was struggling to get hold of the market. It was too late by then .Since players like Xiaomi, BBK group had already strengthened their bases in many markets like India.

Here's the things which Moto can do to get back in the game:

  1. Focus on making one good quality phone

We know how consumers are tired seeing many variations in smartphone market by Xiaomi,  BBK with not so very good specs.

Moto under lenovo was no less. It included many variants namely style, power, play in the g series with very minor changes. This needs to stop and focus should be on making one good quality phone in each category of entry, mid-range and flagship level so they can enhance their user experience.

  2. Give timely stable security updates atleast

The latter under Google was so good in delivering updates that it was a praise among consumers. But under lenovo people heavily criticized it that it was not delivering proper updates. Even though they were under Google's Android One program

We have seen it under the edge+ flagship series where it was under hot fire among consumers paying a bomb and not getting timely updates. Then Motorola took back it's words and then announced it would get two major Android version updates and security patches for 2/3 years.

However the user interface (My UX) remains the same with a touch of stock Android and useful customization.

  3. Give a good impression of brand through strong after-sales service

We have seen offline smartphone marketers like Oppo from BBK group making a strong impression in consumer's mind with free inspection, 30 mins repair service and no longer wait times to get your device back.

However Moto was not taking it's customers  seriously. They complained of not getting their devices back even after weeks, some cases ranging months. This is a major disappointment to anyone who buys a Motorola phone.

If these things are improved then Motorola has a very good chance of getting stronger in this cut-throat competition in 2021

PS : The moto g series phones like g40 and g60 etc lacked compass sensors which is essential for people who rely heavily on navigation because GPS signals are not very good in crowded cities of India
